World Cultural Site of Delos #234

Delos is a UNESCO world cultural heritage site.

It is an ark of History sailing gently in the waters of the Aegean, just a few miles away from cosmopolitan Mykonos. It is an opportunity for a unique tour in the revival of the glory of the ancient Greek culture.

It is the foreshore of the Cylades, the birthplace of the immortals. It is the island that "baptized" the Cyclades, as an island cluster that grows in a circle around it.

In ancient times, the myth of the birth of Apollo and Artemis made the island sacred: no mortal would be allowed to be born on its soil. And, since it was a cradle of immortals, no mortal would even be allowed to die there.

Thus, in addition to its importance as a religious and economic center, the island also maintained an exclusivity: even in the period of the great flourishing of the Delian Alliance, women who were about to give birth, as well as those who seemed to be nearing the end of of their lives, they were sent to the neighboring island of Rhenia.

All the then known world recognized the sanctity of the island and knew its uniqueness.

Today, the island remains unique in the entire known world: nowhere is there such a large natural island archaeological site of such great importance.

No island in the world hosts so many and monumental relics of the archaic, classical and Hellenistic periods, i.e. the centuries of great Greek art, in an area that is used exclusively as an archaeological site. Because, Delos is not a museum, Delos is not used as a place that tells a story. Delos is History itself.

Visitors to the island, who arrive daily from the neighboring islands, are not just making an educational excursion; in fact, they are living an unparalleled life experience. And, in a magical, transcendent way, the sanctity of Delos is constantly restored: as the whole island is an archaeological site without other activities, the thousands of people who flock to share its uniqueness, visit it with the awe of man in holy place. And, thus, History repeats itself: in such a great place no man is born and no man dies.

Access: Daily (weather permitting) there is a connection to Mykonos. During the summer months, boats connect the island with Tinos and Naxos. The archaeological site remains closed on Mondays.
