Description
The wall stretched about one mile from the base of a steep mountain to the sea, marking the only easy route from Kalamata to Mani, known as the “gate of Mani.”
After capturing Mesologi in April 1826, Ibrahim Pasha advanced to Kalamata with 7,000 troops and 1,500 cavalry. The Maniates awaited him at the Verga wall, and a three-day battle ensued from June 22 to 24, 1826. The Greek fighters resisted fiercely, forcing the Muslim army to retreat with significant losses. This marked Ibrahim's first defeat in the Peloponnese and was a crucial battle in the Greek Revolution.
The Verga fortification was a simple stone wall, about 2 meters high and 1,500 meters long, with two towers at each end housing small cannons. Today, only remnants of the wall and one tower remain.
